Organisational activity report service

What is this service?

As part of NHS Resolution’s strategic commitment to share data and insights across healthcare, the Practitioner Performance Advice Service (“the Advice service”) is able to make available to individual NHS organisations their own activity reports which contain information about the profile of cases brought by them to the Advice service over a five-year period.

Activity reports are a unique tool available to be used by individuals in your organisation, for example Chief Medical Officers, Medical Directors, Clinical Directors, Directors of HR/Workforce, and HR business partners, who have responsibility for the oversight, management and/or governance of performance concerns about individual practitioners in frontline services.

Discussion of report

In addition to receiving a report, you will also be offered a confidential discussion with your Link Adviser and a member of our Insights team to undertake a detailed, collaborative review of the report. These discussions can include more than one individual, as detailed above, and we encourage conversations with both clinical and HR personnel, recognising that responsibility for the effective management of performance concerns can involve multiple disciplines at a local level.

The purpose of these discussions are to:

  • Explore types of concerns, demographics of the practitioners and specialty groups within your case profile and reflect how this compares with that of similar sized NHS organisations
  • Gain a better understanding about patterns of your cases with Advice, including where there have been clusters of cases in particular groups of staff, to support managing and resolving individual and team performance concerns fairly and effectively
  • Signpost to the range of specialist services available from the Advice service to support individual case handling

We share and review reports with individual organisations on a confidential basis. In reviewing the report with an organisation, the discussion will focus on the profile of cases and not feature a review of individual cases.

How can this service benefit my organisation?

After receipt and discussion of the report we ask organisations to consider how the information could be used to:

  • Assist local performance management and improve frontline understanding of the cause of concerns
  • Support internal governance and assurance, such as reporting to Board on performance concerns management and resolution
  • Inform local action on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI), for example the NHS equality, diversity, and inclusion improvement plan’s ‘High impact action 1’, and demonstrate how organisational data can be used to improve culture, establish EDI-related areas of concern and prioritise actions.

Which organisations can access this service?

Currently this service is available to secondary care trusts in England.

We plan to expand this service further in 2025 to include primary care and mental health services in England, in addition to healthcare organisations in Wales and Northern Ireland.
