New academic partnership to deliver benefits in patient safety and improved claims learning

NHS Resolution is delighted to announce the launch of a new academic partnership with London South Bank University and Staffordshire University, which has been in place since March 2021. The partnership has been designed as a collaboration between NHS Resolution and both universities to support the development of learning resources and the sharing of best practice to improve safety and contribute to a reduction in harm and subsequent claims.

It’s hoped that the partnership will provide NHS Resolution with academic support in the preparation of thematic reviews and reports, and support the development of an online platform to widen access to NHS Resolution’s wide range of resources designed to support NHS trusts in improving patient safety. The collaboration will also provide expertise in influencing behavioural change to embed safer practice processes in partnership with a wide range of system partners and monitoring and evaluating the impacts of any interventions.

“I’m delighted that we’ll be working with experts from both Staffordshire and London South Bank Universities over the next 12 months” explains Dr Denise Chaffer, Director of Safety and Learning at NHS Resolution.

“The partnership is an opportunity to make a real difference to patient safety and learning across the NHS, and will ensure that the health and justice systems are able to routinely learn from the clinical cases and subsequent claims that we see.”

Dr Sarahjane Jones, Associate Professor in patient Safety at Staffordshire University said “NHS Resolution has a wealth and richness of data on patients’ experience of care at the most challenging times.”

“We are excited to work on this partnership to derive insight and intelligence from this data. As universities, we are well placed to translate this learning into educational content and support healthcare workforce development in patient safety.”

Professor Alison Leary, Chair of Healthcare and Workforce Modelling at London South Bank University said “We are very excited to be working on this important project in partnership with NHS Resolution.”

“We hope working together will help gain more insight into potential ways to improve patient safety and embed patient safety in practitioner education and development.”

The contract will run for a year, until March 2022.
